This is our history as a Church this year 14th June 1797
Cymanfa (singing festival) near Penbont, Llandysul, Carmarthenshire
28th June 1797
Special History
He bade several members living afar, come from around Llangendeirn and Llanddarog, send us a kindly letter and missions requesting release from our cause - permission to set up their own church. Also some members from Penuel Carmarthen, who agreed with them and were living in those neighbourhoods, joining with them to form a separate church in a house near Penybont, Llangendeirn. He bade us listen to their plea to allow them to go with
Love - since there was no difference of opinion and HE enabled them to form a church - A Cause of Brothers and Sisters from Carmarthen at Ty’r Bont near Llangendeirn.

This is how things were from the last Cymanfa (singing festival) until the Cymanfa (singing festival) in Salem near Meidrim, Carmarthenshire. Some of the ministers disagreed about religious doctrines. They stood for General Redemption and other beliefs held by the Armenians.
They decided to separate from us and we from them and various members chose to leave with them. This commotion caused considerable grief and weariness. Up till now we have stood our ground

The history of Ty Newydd near Felinfoel in the year 1804 - June when we demolished much of our Meeting House where it was rotten. It was extended by thirteen feet and the loft and chairs were replaced - as it is now - as a convenient place to worship God.
Previously it was old - 95 years old - and much of it falling into disrepair.
We were about 200 members setting our hands to the task of extending our Meeting Place since He was encouraging the members and listeners.
The brothers and sisters worked hard to help with the building and the community set about the work with love. The total cost was close to £200 (today’s money approximately £10,567) - we received no assistance from any other church. The Lord constantly augments His church and those who are saved.
The present minister is Daniel Davies with David Bowen assisting him.

The Lord was smiling down on us and peace was amongst us. Praise for that treasure namely peace in the church of the Saints.
23rd June - Sunday afternoon - six people were baptised by Daniel Davies on Pembre mountain with thousands watching.
Where Morris Jones and Daniel Davies preached sermons

This briefly is our report from the previous Gymanfa (singing festival) until the Gymanfa at Llandyssul the second Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of June in the year 1823.
Here the Churches related their tales of their peace and general increase in the numbers in their congregations. We had good sermons and large numbers in the congregation. Some of the Heavenly Dew descended on our souls - to our great comfort and joy. Praise the Lord for His great tenderness to us - the vile dust of the earth.

This briefly is our report from the previous Gymanfa until the Gymanfa at Cwmifor the second Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of June in the year 1824. Here we heard reports that all the churches were generally united in peace and a great crowd came together to listen to the ministers proclaiming the Gospel with enlightenment and zeal.
And the people listened in a state of great liveliness. Thanks be to God for His goodness and His wonders for wretched unworthy men.

This is a brief report from the Gymanfa (singing festival) at Pen Park until the Gymanfa at Cwmdu 11th and 12th of June in the year 1826. There we heard that the churches were generally all at peace. Also where there was dawn hue on the face of God and the services. There was amiability from the people. Praise on the morning of the Lord’s Day where David Bowen preached a sermon on baptisms to a large number of people and also preached near Sardis to the crowds and afterwards he and the church partook of the Lord’s supper. And great beauty was seen in the work. Praise be to God for his Goodness.

This is our report from the Gymanfa (singing festival) at Cardigan until the one at Llangloffan (1832)
Page 44
A report of the unusual changes that took place in the Church as follows:-
Two of our sections decided to set up on their own namely Capel Sion in the town of Llanelly and Soar in Llwynhendu (Llwynhendy) and Morfa.
About a hundred and fifty went to Capel Sion and about forty five went to Soar not because of a difference of opinion but with a view to expanding the cause.
This took place during the two years mentioned above (1831 and 1832)
19th March 1834
A report of the third change that took place in the Church at Falafel - that the members living in the areas around Llanedi and Pontardyles (Pontarddulais) and Llanon should go to Sardis. Some previously at Felinfoel made a request to the church to be allowed to start meeting at Sardis. We released them with love with a view to expanding the cause: not a change of opinion. Their number was fifty nine.

This is our report from the Gymanfa (singing festival) in Ffynonhendry until the Gymanfa at Salem, Meidrym in 1835. There were large congregations and many ministers present. We heard enlightening and mighty sermons on the richness of God through his Son to the pitiful sinners of the earth. Many people feasted on the truths with great joy. And peace was amongst them. Praise be to the God of Peace.

This is our report from the Gymanfa at Salem, Meidrim until the Gymmanfa at Cappel Sion Llanelly 1st June 1836. We heard that the Churches were generally peaceable but there were complaints about the lack of success and lifelessness within religion. There was a large congregation and some valuable sermons. Thanks be to the Lord for His Goodness - You who created us. And let the Kingdom of the Messiah encompass the whole world.

Another year has passed by. When examining the changes that have happened in the Church in the past year I feel a little disappointed that some people have been expelled, some have died and therefore the Church has fewer members that the previous year. There is nothing to be done save to contemplate and to pray with humility to the Lord. Our future is in His hands. For His mighty name signed Moses Roberts.

This is our account from the 1862 Gymanfa (singing festival) up until the 1863 Gymanfa
Page 80
In 1871 the Reverend J Jones moved from Brynebo to take up pastoral duties at this church. He had received two previous calls from the church.
The first in 1864 after the Reverend Moses Roberts had left and before the Reverend W. Lewis from Dowlais became minister.
The second time was in 1870 after the Reverend W. Lewis resigned because of the ill health that affected his sight and his hearing.
However the Reverend Jones determined, quite rightly, to refuse these two calls.
The first time because he had just started building up a new chapel in Brynebo and the second time because the Church was not unanimous in their choice. The last time he accepted the call after the church confirmed that only nine people had not voted for him. He was also told that these nine were not important people as they had other reasons for the way they voted and that they had nothing against him personally. If he were misinformed then the blame would fall on the Church members. There were 505 Church members at this time.
The minister has had no reason to be unhappy in the first year of his move. Peace and tranquillity reign over the Church and the congregation appreciates his efforts. More that this the God of every grace has seen fit to commend his service here as the statistics on the next pages demonstrate.
The minister came here with a wife and four children.
The Church contributed handsomely for his relocation from Brymbo in Denbighshire to Llanelly. Several farmers such as Bonville of Ysgubrisaf and Rees of Ystrad fawr transported them free of charge from Llanelly to Felinfoel. God will repay them. The Church and its brothers and sisters prepared the house before the minister and his family arrived. The house was papered, painted and made ready for them. The minister received a great welcome and much kindness on his arrival.
The first Sunday after his arrival he preached a sermon from Acts chapter 10 verse 29 to a large congregation giving his reasons for accepting the call asking for their cooperation in carrying out God’s work.

A few remarks on the proposed Motion made by the Brethren at Llanelly for to have a morning service at their Chapel
They say that the sole object they have in mind is to enlarge the cause of our Lord Jesus Christ in the world. This is certainly is very good and Christian men ought not to do or speak any thing against so laudable a design. But we are weak, frail and sinful mortals, and as such we are liable to err and the best of men have erred, and we are not infallible, more than they. Saul intended to enlarge the cause of God in the world but the way that he took to do that was by persecuting the cause of Christ and if it had been in his power when he was in his mistaken notions about the way to accomplish it he would have destroyed the cause of Christ from the world. Again Constantine the Great endeavoured to promote and enlarge the cause of Jesus Christ in the world by uniting the church and state together. But what has been a greater barrier or hindrance to the promoting and enlarging of the cause of Christ in the world than the union of church and State from that time until the present time. And that great and most devout servant of Christ John Calvin who with the least doubt is in the realms of glory with Christ singing his praises now and shall be there to all eternity. He conscientiously endeavoured to promote and enlarge the cause of Christ in the world by burning Michael Servetus? and John Cas? But the way that he took to enlarge it was the very way to stop the progress of the Gospel. Several instances might be brought forward of mistaken notions but let the above suffice at present. Again our Brethren say that the very desire of the generation of the people is for Morning service . But that will not do again as a good plea.
Page 85
For it was the voice of the people that crucified the Lord of Glory. Now the reason that I am against the proposed plan is because I conscientiously believe that it will hinder the progress of the cause of Christ more than it will promote and enlarge it. For I know that seven of the Brethren are against it. Therefore by being too hasty about it -it will be a means to destroy Christian charity which is contrary to the express command of Christ. Serve one another and I am sure that if this. Motion takes place shortly without some time for it to ripen and to consider it calmly, it will breed hatred in one brethren to the other. Which you should strive not to do. For Paul said if my brethren are grieved with my meat, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth lest I make my brother to offend. Now I hope that all the Deacons will put the matter down in their respective societies and consult them on the subject that they may know something of how to act when they meet for the purpose of accomplishing the matter and not to proceed of their own heads lest they may be vexed afterwards . And every Deacon that cannot attend the meeting himself I do insist upon him to send his proxy there that the number may be full. But our Brethren are so confident that their purpose is the best that could be thought of to enlarge the cause of Christ with them that they seem to wonder how any man could presume to think to the contrary. But they are not infallible and I hope that they do not think themselves to be so. Therefore some have the same right to think that the plan is not good as it they have to think that their plan is good.
But it would be a very desirable thing if everything should be left as it is as long as our venerable and reverend father D. Davies should be left with us, for to destroy the cause in one place for to enlarge it in another place is not enlarging the cause of Christ, it is only feeding mans carnal fancy. And I am afraid that there is a little carnality in this work - if I am mistaken so much the better - for to be carnally minded is death. Therefore let us not grieve our venerable and reverend father in his grey hairs. But rather let us comfort him and support him
Therefore as professors of the religion of the meek and lovely Jesus we should beware not to aim to do anything in the way of religion which has a tendency to destroy Christian unity. But I am fully convinced that the proposed motion has a tendency to destroy Christian unity. Again let the chapel at Felinfoel be repaired before any separation take place. And the nominal yearly rent be demanded to support the ministry at Felinfoel. And if they remain one let them have one morning service every month for the sake of peace.
