Meidrim Parish Church![]() Meidrim is a small parish, in the hundred of DERLLYS union and county of Carmarthenshire, South Wales, it is 8 miles west from the town of Carmarthen. The village, is set deep in scenic country side, and benefits from a course of rivers which run through the parish. It is estimated that the village comprises of 6000 acres of land, the majority used for farming. Meidrim has approximately 603 residents, a village school, 2 public houses, both a church and chapel, village green and playing field. Meidrim village lies at an historic bridging point of the Afon Dewi Fawr. It is suggested that Meidrim origins lie in prehistory, an example of this is the Church which has been was built with strong definitions of an Iron Age Hillfort and Norman Architecture. It is not known where the name Meidrim originates from, although there are many suggestions: Meidrim signifies high ground used for early Summer pasture. 'Mei' + 'trum' = May Ridge. Another suggestion is 'Meidr' or 'Beidr' mean track, and 'im' meaning little. The name Meidrim may have also come from an early Christian Saint called Nailtrum, or as mentioned in a 12th Century poem it may mean "half of the shoulder"of a hill. It has even been said that it is a corruption of "My dream"!! |
